Me as a VC

I've been investing in start-ups for well over a decade. I don't think of myself as an 'angel investor'. Interestingly, the term 'angel investor' comes from 19th century Broadway where wealthy patrons would finance theatrical productions that couldn't otherwise get off the ground. The people and companies I invest in are launching with or without me.

I back founders who inspire me with their commitment to 'right some wrong' in the marketplace or to instantiate something the world's gonna love (but doesn't see coming). When the opportunity or necessity arises, I often get super involved -- fundraising, mentoring, BD, strategy, recruiting, branding and communications, etc.

I make money.  More importantly I make lifelong friends that help me grow and be myself.

Here’s my track record for what is effectively a 10 year fund (first investment included in this analysis was in 2015).  Below that I’ve included quotes from a bunch of the founders I’ve backed.

"Andrew was one of the first calls I made when starting my new venture. His creativity, connectivity, and energy is unparalleled."
Steve EllsFounder, Counter Service (previously Founder of Chipotle)

--

"Andrew is as much a founder of MSCHF as anyone. He's been my partner since the beginning and continues to help us realize big dreams."
Gabe WhaleyFounder, MSCHF

--

"During our first raise for Away, we tried to curate great creative and generous people. We're lucky Andrew was one of them."
Steph KoreyFounder, Away Luggage

--

"Having Andrew involved in the early days at Sir Kensington was without a doubt part of our secret sauce. (No pun intended)."
Scott NortonFounder, Sir Kensington

--

"Andrew was the first one to 'get' what we were trying to build. And we talked to a lot of people before him."
Chris StangFounder, The Infatuation

--

"I did NOT expect Andrew would be a thought partner across so many aspects of this business. His insights and instincts grounded in consumer businesses translates quite well to GovTech. Who knew?"

Irina Denisenko Founder CEO, Knox Systems

--

"From trunk-show days to private equity investment, Andrew has been our most trusted ally, mentor and motivator."
Caroline DanehyFounder, Fair Harbor

--

"Andrew gave me the nudge I needed to move on my idea. More than that, he's backed it up with capital and the creative firepower to get us successfully launched."
James O'ReillyFounder, Lore Bathing Club

--

"DTC engagement rings was far from an obvious concept to get behind, yet Andrew came on as an initial investor and advisor. His faith in us and our vision continues to be a huge difference maker as we're now scaling the company."
Kegan FisherFounder, Frank Darling

--

"From our original LES location through our pivot to CPG and sale to Kiss Beauty, Andrew has been there with great advice and clutch connections. He's been a lot more than an investor. He's become a dear friend and mentor."
Cyndi RamirezFounder, Chillhouse

--

"There should be a new metric invented for Andrew — something that measures impact per dollar invested. He came into our first round with a small check and has made the biggest impact of anyone on the cap table."
Sam NaparstekFounder, Rocco

--

"In addition to fundraising and networking, Andrew's intuitive sense of storytelling has been helpful in how we go to market and develop our offering."
Oz WoloshynFounder, Kaleidoscope

Oceans of Talent

True story. I co-founded Oceans Talent, an off-shore recruiting and staffing company that taps the best talent from Sri Lanka. This is thanks to the vision, leadership, and pure hustle of my friend and frequent collaborator, Ian Myers.

This business ended up not being so foreign to me (pun intended). From the beginning, we focused on building an employee culture that translated into a great client experience. Easier said than done, and the credit all goes to Ian and the team. Below: a few fun facts and pictures from travels to Sri Lanka.

--> Oceans is one of the largest employers in Sri Lanka (team ~1,000)

-->Oceans serves ~350 clients -- largely early and growth stage companies

-->I look great in a tunic.

New is Now Old

Being part of New Stand will forever be a defining part of my career and life experience. My co-founders and I had a bold vision for blending retail and media. At a time when the world was pushing 'content to commerce', we were pushing 'commerce to content' — using our stores and app to intro people to cool new things. We REALLY went for it — over $50M raised, partnership with the largest real estate company in the world, and a number of big pivots. We saw some great success. But we also made too many mistakes…and Covid kinda put the nail in the coffin. New Stand has been restaged and has helped to form a new venture, Daycast. I am forever grateful to my co-founders, employees, investors, advisors, partners for helping me get this incredible experience. The biggest shout-out goes to my wife Heather, who road a rollercoaster with me for ten years without complaining too much.

Daycast

In my previous career, I spent countless hours reviewing, debating, and refining ideas for clients—evaluating whether concepts were truly "breakthrough" or “on strategy”. We could easily spend six months developing a brand positioning or campaign for a new energy drink.

All that effort was before production where we'd then spend months (and often millions of dollars) obsessing over details like casting, typography, music selection, or the opinions of a CMO’s nephew. Sometimes all that effort produced a hit. Sometimes it failed completely. More often, the result landed somewhere in between.

I’ve yet to see anything approaching the same level of focus that’s routinely applied to consumer or customer marketing applied to employee experience. It’s not that employees are an afterthought. Rather, there is no comparable ecosystem of resources dedicated to helping companies connect meaningfully with their employees.

Today, organizations looking to improve employee engagement are forced to choose between partners that don't span strategy and execution. There's 'big consulting' (eg. Accenture) offering high-level strategy disconnected from implementation, or there's 'big hospitality' (eg. Aramark) providing logistics without strategic depth.

In between sits a fragmented collection of point solutions: offsite planners, survey providers, gifting companies, and countless others that organizations must stitch together and manage themselves. And, almost none bring meaningful creative ideas or capabilities to the table.

It’s with this gap in mind that I’m launching Daycast.

Daycast brings agency-level strategy, creativity, and execution to workplace experience—partnering with leadership, HR, and facilities teams to thoughtfully elevate the employee experience.
